Help strengthen CEPA – Canada’s pollution law
Tell government not to delay Canadian Environmental Protection Act modernization
In its September throne speech, government committed to modernizing the Canadian Environmental Protection Act but without any clear timeline.
Send a message to your MP and the environment minister. Tell them to move forward quickly with amendments to strengthen CEPA and protect the human right to a healthy environment!
Better protections for human health and the environment have never been more important.
Preventable exposures to toxics and pollution take a constant toll on human health, contributing to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, diabetes, cancer and other chronic conditions. Globally, ambient air pollution alone is responsible for 8.8 million premature deaths per year — a “pollution pandemic,” according to the author of this new research.
CEPA is supposed to protect against these threats, but it hasn’t been updated for more than two decades. In 2017, the House of Commons environment committee reviewed CEPA and made 87 recommendations for strengthening the act, including amendments to recognize the human right to a healthy environment and the need to protect vulnerable populations and better control toxic substances.
In this era of climate emergency, increasing toxic threats and multiple pressures on our health-care system, we need strong environmental laws to protect human health and the environment.
In September, the federal government committed to modernizing the Canadian Environmental Protection Act but without any clear timeline.
